Open Auditions for OKLAHOMA!

July 31 6:00pm to 9:00pm; August 1st - 9am to Noon and 1pm to 4pm; August 2nd - by appointment only from 1pm to 5pm. The Parotti Music Building is located north of the Fine Arts Center Theatre on the WNMU campus. Open call for ages 8 to 80. Casting numerous roles for men and women in a wide range of ages. A limited number of ensemble roles are available for children. Those auditioning requested to prepare a musical selection preferably in style of Rodgers & Hammerstein and to bring sheet music in their key - an accompanist will be available. Be prepared to learn an easy dance combination and some may be asked to read selections from the script. Dates of performance are: October 2-4, 9-11.

Third Annual Volunteer Festival
1 August

On August 1st 2009, The Volunteer Center of Grant County will hold the Third Annual Volunteer Festival at Gough Park from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. The goal of the festival is to appreciate the volunteers throughout Grant County and to provide an opportunity for local non-profit organizations that use volunteers to showcase their agency and recruit more volunteers. Music will be provided the band Scott Van Linge and Friends.

Sounds of Silver City LIVE!
8 August - 9 August


There will be two full days of live music by local musicians in the historic Silco Theater.Both days start at Noon and end at 11 pm. "Sounds of Silver City Live!" will feature performances of songs from the upcoming "Sounds of Silver City" compilation CD (now on sale), as well as performances by other musicians. The cost will be $5/ticket for the entire afternoon, or for the evening performance.The event is a fundraiser of the Silco Theater.

Fort Bayard Walking Tour

A walking tour will commence from the New Deal Theater, which is located on the northeast side of the medical facility. Kathy Hill, who grew up at Fort Bayard will be the tour guide. Participants are encouraged to wear good walking shoes and bring a hat or cap and a bottle of water. The tour lasts approximately an hour and a half. Although the tour is free, donations to be used for restoration are welcome!

Motorcycle Show (Fundraiser for Penny Park)

10am to 4pm. No charge. Events for the day include: Motorcycle show (categories are Best of Show, Custom, Sport, Bagger, Foreign) w/prizes for 1st place in each category. $5 entry fee. Entry time 9-11am with judging at 2:30pm. Live music, door prizes, 50/50, fun, bike games, vendors, fastest hog dog eating contest and much much more. 18th Annual Run to Copper Country (Car Show)
14 August - 16 August


“Run to Copper country,” open to all vehicles 1973 and older. On Saturday, it will take place from 8 a.m.to mid-afternoon, depending on weather, at the park. Registration for participants, at $35 per car, will begin on Friday, August 14, from 2-8 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, and continue at Gough Park Saturday morning. The show will wrap up Sunday morning with a farewell get together for participants. The public is invited to “stroll on down” and enjoy the car show at no charge. There will be vendors, refreshments, raffles and music, in addition to all the beautiful vehicles on display. The theme is “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” The day’s events begin at 9:30 am with a walking tour which will include the Commanding Officer’s home. Free Summer Energy Fair

Sign up for help with food and utility bills, discuss PNM payment plans, enjoy snacks and receive great giveaways while supplies last at the free Energy Fair on Wednesday, August 26, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bessie-Forward Global Resource Center, located at 12th and Kentucky Streets on the Western New Mexico University Campus in Silver City. Participants can pick up a free money-saving compact fluorescent light bulb while supplies last, a $25 IGA grocery card (for the first 200 households to sign up for a payment plan or LIHEAP) and get tips on lowering home energy bills. PNM will be joined by the New Mexico Human Services Department, Interfaith Power and Light, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, Silver City Food Coop and The Volunteer Center of Grant County. The fair provides an opportunity to apply for several assistance programs in one convenient location, including the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for help with utility bills, free home weatherization, Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (or SNAP, formerly the food stamp program).
