    Name: WNMU 9/11 Commemoration
    Date: September 11, 2017
    Time: 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM MDT
    Event Description:
Western New Mexico University is hosting a ceremony in commemoration of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The public ceremony will take place at 5:00 p.m. in Old James Stadium on Monday, September 11. Nearly 3,000 U.S. flags will be on display for the 2,996 victims of the attacks.

WNMU students will perform special music and remarks will be given by President Joseph Shepard and others.

Attendees are invited to participate in a remembrance walk throughout the field. Following the event is a reception outside of the Brancheau P.E. Complex.
“The farther we move away in time from the day of the attacks, the greater the importance it is to honor the memory of the victims and educate our students of the ideals for which unite as Americans,” said Abe Villarreal, WNMU Director of Communications.

For Katherine M. Warren, WNMU Coordinator of Student Activities, holding an annual ceremony is necessary to remind students on how everyone was affected differently by the attacks.

“I am fortunate to work in a university community that is diverse not only in the students’ backgrounds but in their ideas and ways of life,” said Warren. “The ceremony will help honor all those who contributed to our great country in so many ways. More than 90 countries lost citizens in the attacks.”

Western New Mexico University has served the people of the state of New Mexico and its surrounding areas as a comprehensive, regional, rural, public coeducational university since 1893 and serves a student body diverse in age, culture, language and ethnic background.
