Guest speaker will be Western New Mexico University's School of Business Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Finance, Dr. Miguel Vicéns.
Miguel Angel Vicéns Feliberty was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and the oldest of five siblings. He received his B.S.B.A. in Industrial Management from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez in 1996. After his graduation, he went to work in international business, as assistant to the director of the Foreign Trade Zone 163 in the town of Ponce, Puerto Rico. During that time, he became an expert on Foreign Trade Zones, overseeing the security procedures, establishment of operations, government relations and overall international trade of goods and services. He also provided training to companies becoming tenants in Foreign Trade Zones. After eight years of working in this industry, Miguel decided to pursue a Master Degree in Business Administration (M.B.A). In 2004, he began studies at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, while working full time at the Foreign Trade Zone. He graduated with his M.B.A in Finance, in 2008. Dr. Vicens capitalized on his work experience to produce his master thesis. Using a model developed in Europe he achieved to identify which industries will add value to the operations of a project call The Port of las Americas in the south of Puerto Rico. This was also Dr. Vicens’ first publication in 2011 (Puerto Rico and the Port of Las Américas).
After the completion of his M.B.A, he continued studies, this time pursuing a doctoral degree. He was accepted in the Doctor of Economic Development (D.E.D) Program at New Mexico State University (NMSU) and other two doctoral programs in the mainland U.S.A. The D.E.D is closely related to Dr. Vicens’ work experience, education and research interests. During his tenure in the program, Dr. Vicens worked as consultant for economic development initiatives, business advisor at NMSU’s Arrowhead Center and as teaching assistant at NMSU. In 2013, Dr. Vicens was hired at Western New Mexico University (WNMU) as Assistant Professor of Management. In 2014 he stepped into the M.B.A Program Director position and in 2016 he was voted by his colleagues to the position of Associate Dean of the School of Business, WNMU. Dr. Vicens is currently serving as Associate professor of Finance at WNMU and serving his 6th year as Associate Dean. Dr. Vicéns, has earned several awards, developed international collaborations, established a successful entrepreneurial program, and implemented a culture of total quality management in the School of Business. Dr. Vicens lead the School of Business to a successful reaffirmation of the ACBSP accreditation in 2018. Under his leadership, the School continues expanding online offerings, internationalizing its programs, and striving to provide opportunities for students beyond the Silver City campus. Dr. Vicens has presented his research internationally, published in respected journals, and collaborated with universities in Mexico with the publication of several books in entrepreneurship and economics. Dr. Vicens currently lead several economic development initiatives in the Southwest New Mexico region, oversees the Small Business Development Center in Silver City and works closely with local and regional organization to provide education and economic development to the area.
Dr. Vicéns will be talking about the current position of the School of Business, and the outstanding performance of the School of Business Graduates.
