Place: The Gardens: WNMU Admission: Free Co-Sponsor: Western Institute for Lifelong Learning (WILL) Western New Mexico University kicks off its cultural season with a free outdoor concert by Cape Verdean vocalist Lucibela, who was born in 1986 on São Nicolau, one of the Barlavento islands – the ‘windward’ isles to the north of the Sahel archipelago. The secret of Lucibela’s extraordinary vocal technique lies in her ability to explore the deep register of Brazil’s great sambistas while adding a thrilling vibrato. The songs from the traditional repertoire that Lucibela champions span decades. Lucibela blends a musical cornucopia of the islands – using guitars, cavaquinho, saxophone, accordion and violin. Lucibela loves to sing, and the port city of Mindelo, where she was raised, is a musical paradise thanks to the Brazilian, Cuban, British and Portuguese sailors who sowed the seeds of morna and coladera. Those Creole fusion genres were introduced to the world by one of their most illustrious performers: Cesaria Evora, a native of Mindelo. https://www.lucibela.com Courtesy of WNMU Cultural Affairs Department.
