Silver City Museum Will Offer Fall Break Día De Los Muertos Craft Classes October 11-14, 2016 The Silver City Museum will offer a series of craft classes with a Día de los Muertos theme during the public schools’ fall break. Classes will be held 10 am – 12 noon Tuesday through Friday, October 11-14, 2011. Pending good weather, classes will be held outside in the Museum Courtyard. If the weather is rainy or very cold, the classes will be moved inside to the Museum Annex at 302 West Broadway. Four classes will present traditional craft making to elementary-aged and older children in honor of Día de los Muertos, the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday, which is celebrated to honor our ancestors. The class schedule will be as follows: Tuesday October 11: Tissue Paper Marigolds Wednesday October 12: Papel Picado Thursday October 13: Matchbox Altars Friday October 14: Sugar Skull Decorating The Papel Picado paper-cutting workshop will be led by local artist Dougan Hales and will offer options for varying skill levels. Interested adult participants will have the opportunity to work from templates created by the master papel picaco artist Catalina Delgado Trunk. The Silver City Library will be offering a sugar skull making workshop on Thursday, October 13. We invite participants to bring their sugar skulls to the Silver City Museum on Friday to decorate them! For the Craft Class series, there will be a $5 fee per class, per person. The classes are geared towards elementary school-aged children, and parent/guardian attendance is required. In celebration of Día de los Muertos, the Silver City Museum also plans to have an ofrenda for former curator Harry Benjamin. Flowers and papel picado made in the workshops can become part of the offering to this very important and fondly remembered contributor to the Silver City Museum and the arts community of Silver City. On November 1, please join us for a performance by Mariachi Canto a Mi Tierra de la UACJ in the Silver City Museum courtyard, 4-5 pm, followed immediately by an Ofrenda Procession beginning at Silver City Museum and proceeding through downtown Silver City to Miller Library.
