Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold is the world’s largest publicly traded copper company
They recently acquired Phelps Dodge which was an international mineral resource and industrial manufacturing company with a proud history dating from 1834.
Freeport McMoRan operates five open-pit copper mining complexes in North America (Morenci‚ Bagdad and Sierrita in Arizona and Chino and Tyrone in New Mexico) and conducts molybdenum mining operations at the Henderson underground mine in Colorado. By-product molybdenum is produced at Sierrita‚ Bagdad‚ and Chino.
We produce electrown copper cathode at leaching and solution extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) operations at Morenci‚ Bagdad‚ Sierrita‚ Miami‚ Tyrone‚ and Chino.
We are the world's leading producer of copper using the SX/EW process. SX/EW is a cost-effective process for extracting copper from certain types of ores and is a major factor in our continuing efforts to maintain internationally competitive costs.
Our Chino Mine and Processing Facilities is a porphyry open-pit copper mine and processing facility.
Did you know? The historic mine was among the first low-grade‚ open-pit copper mines in the world.
Ores: Chalcopyrite‚ chalcocite and some oxides.
Background: Originally mined by Native Americans and later by Spaniards. The open-pit mine began production in 1910. The original concentrator went into operation in 1911‚ but was replaced by a new facility in 1982. The smelter was commissioned in 1939 and was modernized in 1985 to increase capacity and achieve compliance with the Clean Air Act.
Our Tyrone Mine and Processing Facilities are porphyry copper open-pit mine and processing facilities.
Did you know? Home of Phelps Dodge’s first SX/EW plant. The mine is among the lowest grade ore bodies in the Freeport McMoRan mining portfolio.
Ores: Chalcocite and some oxides.
Background: Prior to 1860‚ Indians mined turquoise at the site. Phelps Dodge acquired mining claims in the area from 1909 to 1916‚ and began concentrating ore produced from large- scale underground mining in 1916. Operations ended in 1921. The property returned to operation as an open pit in 1969‚ with copper production from a concentrator. The SX/EW plant was commissioned in 1984. Tyrone's concentrator suspended operations in 1992 when the property made the transition to 100-percent SX/EW production.
