National Poison Control Center- 1-800-222-1222

NurseAdvice New Mexico– 24-hour hotline connects directly to a nurse for advice for all medical concerns. Referrals to other services as needed. 1-877-725-2552

Car Seat Program- Provides car seats on a limited basis, also checks car seat installation in vehicles for free. 388-9708 ext. 21

Conscious Fathering Program - Free program that covers basic baby care and the “things every parent needs to know,” and offers men important insights to help prepare for the precious early months of a baby’s life, complements of Gila Regional Medical Center. 538-4194 or Nigel Vann at 534-0882

Growing Up Together Strong (HMS)- Prenatal care, health counseling, education and teen parenting support groups. Individual support and advocacy. 534-0248

Breastfeeding Support/Lactation Consultant – Information and consultation on breastfeeding for those experiencing difficulties, complements of Gila Regional Medical Center. Mary Gruszka 388-9708 ext.11

Early Childhood Program (WNMU)- Child development center for children 6-weeks to 5 yrs old. Specifically for WNMU students and their families. 538-6344

Family to Family Home Child Care Network (La Familia)– Links parents to registered childcare providers. 538-6750

Families F.I.R.S.T.- Support and education for families throughout pregnancy and birth of child up to three years old. 388-2426 ext. 124

Family Support Services (BAMHS)- A program designed to strengthen and preserve families by providing intensive home-based support services to families with children 0 to 12 yrs. old. Contact Marsha Bowman 574-4619

First Born Program– Support for first-time pregnant women and first-time parents (father or mother) with a trained health educator. Participation can begin any time during pregnancy or later and continues until the child is 3 years old. 388-9708

Breastfeeding Council- Support and advocacy for breastfeeding. Meets monthly. 388-9708 ext. 11

Prenatal Classes- Five-week prenatal class complements Gila Regional Medical Center. 538-4194 or 313-4668

LifeQuest Early Intervention- Provides screening, evaluation and assessment of children from birth to age 3 for developmental delays. 388-3681

Mano a Mano School Age Program – Quality care for elementary children in a recreational setting. Before and after school programs. Children 5 to 12 yrs. 313-3420

Cobre Schools Support Groups- Available in allCobre schools. Support groups including trauma, grief, ADHD, and anger management. Call Scott Asby at 537-4000 ext. 1429 for more information.

Silver Schools Children’s Support Groups – Available in allSilver elementary schools. Support groups including anger management, grief, and socialization. More groups are available. Call Joan Eng MA, school counselor, for more information at 956-2109.

HELP New Mexico- Provides employment services to low-income at-risk youth between the ages of 14-21 yrs old. 534-0361

Multisystemic Therapy (BAMHS) – An effective program for helping youth with chronic, violent delinquent behaviors and/or serious emotional problems. It offers comprehensive home-based treatment for youths and their families. 574-4622

Public Health Office (CAPS) –Birth Certificates, vaccinations, family planning, STD testing & education. (575) 538-5318

Childbirth Education Line– Services include a five-week prenatal class, breastfeeding class, and the Conscious Fathering Program, complements Gila Regional Medical Center. 538-4194 or 313-4668

Confident Parenting (La Familia) – A course in interactive problem solving based in child development theory where parents share problems and solutions. Focuses on children 0 to 12 yrs. 538-6805

Information & Referral Service (La Familia)- Information on parenting and child development and assistance identifying child care options in community. 538-6750

The Neutral Zone-A neutral exchange, visitation and mediation services for families. 534-9920

Parenting Apart (La Familia) – Workshop to help parents and children deal constructively with parental breakup. Assists parents to develop co-parenting plan required by courts in divorce. Focuses on children 0 to 18 yrs. 388-4073

Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbian & Gays (PFLAG)- Support, advocacy and education about sexual orientation and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity. 534-0319

Parents for Behaviorally Different Children- Advocacy, education and support for families and children with neurobiological, emotional and behavioral differences. Provides a variety of services, trainings, parenting resources, and referrals. 1-800-273-7232

Playful Parenting (La Familia) – Six-week course to help parents gain control and enhance relationships with their child through therapeutic play. Focuses on children 3-12 yrs. (Child care provided) 574-8204

Love and Logic Program (BAMHS)- Program that teaches practical, easy-to-use techniques that work to promote positive changes in children’s behavior. Contact Barbara Miller at 574-4637

Toy and Resource Lending Library (La Familia) – Free toy and resource lending library. Features toys, games, books, children’s furnishings and other resources. Ages 0 to 12 yrs. Call for hours available. 538-6806

Community Resources- All Ages

Adult Education Services (WNMU)- GED classes and other educational classes like English as a Second Language, citizenship classes and computer classes. 574-5101

Alimento para el Nino- a school-based, community-supported food pantry program, fights hunger one backpack and one child at a time. Call for more information. 388-2988 or 956-2024

American Red Cross – 24-hour service. Deals with personal disasters caused by fire and offers assistance to those families. First aid, CPR and water safety classes. 534-4621

Bayard Public Library – 537-6244

Bicycle Program— Focuses on bike riding, repair, and safety, and meets twice a in Cobre area and once a week in Silver City area. 538-2061

Border Area Mental Health Counseling Services- Counseling for adults and children, and family services. Silver City at 388-4412, in Bayard 537-3174

Casa de la Cultura en Santa Clara- Art program, Friday family movie nights, youth camp in August 2008. Also Day of the Child Celebration in April 10-13 th. Call for more program details. 538-6526 or 574-4484

Casa Mia Ranch – Equine facilitated therapy for at-risk youth and individuals with varying types of physical, mental and cognitive disabilities.

Children Medical Services- Service for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disabling conditions in children. Children from birth to age 21. 388-9374

DWI Program- Education and other programs to promote safe and responsible driving. 574-066

Family Based Shelter/Crisis Nursery (BAMHS)- Shelter care for at-risk children up to 90 days for children 0 to 18 yrs. old. Crisis Nursery is for at-risk children 0 to 12 yrs old up to 30 days. Both programs are home-based. Aurora Mendoza at 574-4637

Family Support Services (BAMHS)- A program designed to strengthen and preserve families by providing intensive home-based support services to families with children 0 to 12 yrs. old. Contact Marsha Bowman 574-4619

Income Support Division

Food stamps, financial assistance and health insurance to families with dependent children and to persons with disabilities who have no children. 538-2948

Housing Authority Region V (HUD)- Provides rental assistance and other housing programs for a variety of income levels. Housing rehabilitation. 388-1974

Literacy Link Leamos – Free service for adults and families who want to improve their communications skills. Tutoring, pre-GED, English as a Second Language, basic number skills and other aspects of literacy. 388-0892

Living on the Gila – Hiking and outdoor activities information for the Gila National Forest. 388-8201

Medication Assistance Program (MAP)- Helps people receive low or no-cost prescription drugs. 534-0248

New Mexico Children Youth & Families- Investigation of neglect, abuse or exploitation of a child. 1-800-353-5928

New Mexico Legal Aid
Free legal assistance in civil law. Call 1-866-224-5097 to establish eligibility for services. Locally 388-0091

National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI)- A grassroots self-help, support and advocacy organization for people with severe mental illness, their families and friends. 538-3205

Public Health Department-Provides immunizations, family planning, pregnancy testing, and vital statistic like birth certificates. 538-5318

Silver City Gospel Mission- Food pantry, clothing and meals seven days a week (Mon-Sat. at noon and Sunday breakfast, medical clinic first Monday of every month, and shelter for women and children, 114 South Texas, 388-5071

Silver Recreation Center

After school programs, summer programs, seasonal programs during school breaks for children 6 to 12 years old, and assorted free evening activities and weight room available to community. 388-3087  

Summer Lunch Program- Free lunches available for children 1 to 18 yrs old at a variety of locations throughout Grant County during summer vacation. Call for location nearest you. 956-2024

Time Dollar Program- A barter system allows families to ‘bank’ the hours they work and exchange them for various goods and services. Contact Marsha Bowmen 574-4619

Treatment Foster Care (BAMHS)- Out-of-home placement program for children with a mental health diagnosis. Provides a warm, loving, stable environment for children in transition to unification with their families of origin or adoptive families. Children ages 4 to 18 yrs old. United Campus Ministry- Provides support for WNMU population from hospitality to crisis pastoral counseling. 538-6570

Volunteer Center - Community center for volunteers to connect with the volunteer opportunities that best fit their skills. All ages welcome. 388-2988

Women, Infants & Children Program (WIC)- Provides staple foods to those who qualify, nutritional information, breastfeeding support and breast pumps available for loan. 388-9353

Autism Support Circle-A support group for families and individuals with autism.574-4684

After School Learning Program- Voluntarily tutoring Monday through Thursday 3:30-pm-5:00pm SHS Library.
