North American Trail Ride Conference sanctioned Competitive Trail Riding is coming to Grant County
The Gila Chapter of Back Country Horsemen will sponsor aNATRC Competitive Trail Ride on April 1 - 3,2016. The competitve trail ride is limited to 60 entries. All proceeds from this event will help the Silver City based Gila Chapter of BCH to clear and maintain trails in the Gila National Forest for the benefit of hikers, cyclists, horseback riders, hunters, firefighters, as well as tourists that come to Silver City to enjoy the forest.
Horses must be at least 4 years old. It is recommended that riders who have not done a CTR before enter the Novice Division. Any horse under 5 years old MUST enter in NOVICE. Novice riders will travel 20 miles the first day and about 17 the second day. The average pace for Novice is 4 mph, basically a walk. The Open Division will travel 30 miles the first day and 20 the second day at a faster pace, averaging 5-6 mph. Mandatory stops to check horses’ pulse and respiration recovery rates will be done a number of times during competition. Recovery rates are part of scoring for condition. There is also a mandatory lunch rest. You will ride through beautiful private land, and enjoy your horse in a new partnership.
Test your horse and your riding ability during two days, traversing a variety of terrain and natural obstacles on the historic 67,000 acre NAN Ranch. This is not an endurance race, although distance is part of testing both horses and riders.
NATRC exists to provide standard, safe competition in which learning to ride and maintain horse health, all obstacles are natural. Horses are evaluated by a veterinarian judge on soundness, condition, manners and trail ability. Riders are evaluated by an experienced distance rider on how they ride to assist their horses to safely complete the course as well as the care they provide in camp to make their horses ready for the next day’s trail. Scorecards and awardsare given to both horses and riders.
