The Gila Rangers is the Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) Club in Grant County. It is part of an organization called the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), ( www.sassnet.com ) headquartered east of Albuquerque, in Moriarty, New Mexico. At the SASS HQ they hold the international match (End Of Trail) annually in June, and hosts nearly 1,000 competitors and hundreds of vendors from around the world.
Each year, on the second weekend in September, the Gila Rangers holds their annual match titled ‘The Geronimo Trail ShootOut’ (GTSO). We host between 40-60 shooters from around NM and bordering states.
The shoot consist of several warm-up matches of Long Range, Cowboy Clay Bird and other events on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, we shoot 12 stages (6 Sat. & 6 Sun.) of CAS until we hold the Awards Ceremonies by mid-afternoon on Sunday. The participants wear clothes from the 1800’s, go by unique ‘aliases’, and shoot guns that were produced before the 1900’s. The stages are performed on 6 ranges of realistic Cowboy facades, and involve shooting two revolvers, a rifle, and a shotgun at steal targets cleverly placed on each range.
All visitors are welcome to watch the match. We have some vendors selling related wares, and food for sale at our range. Many attendees camp out on our range in Water Canyon on the Fowler Land & Cattle Company Ranch at mile marker 10.5 in the Mimbres Valley.
