Book signing and talk on “Hypnotizing Chickens” by Jan Sherman will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2016, at 2 pm in the Silver City Museum Annex, 302 W. Broadway. Jan Sherman will give a talk and do a book signing on her new book, “Hypnotizing Chickens”, on Saturday, October 8, 2016, in the Silver City Museum Annex, 302 W. Broadway at 2 pm. In her recently published book of memoirs, “Hypnotizing Chickens and Other Stories: My Memories of Mogollon”, Jan focuses on her growing up years—between 1928 and 1940—in the gold and silver mining town of Mogollon in Catron county. In recounting her stories of her brother, Bud’s, and her childhood adventures—such as hypnotizing the family chickens—to her friends and family, Jan was told that she should publish them. Developing her book became a nine-month project with the help of the team who comprise her publishing company, Peckin’ Order Press. In “Hypnotizing Chickens”, Jan paints a charming picture of Mogollon, as it was in a unique time, through the eyes of adventurous children who enjoyed a simple and beautiful life in the wild, wild West. As Tom Hester states, “Abandoned mine tunnels, ownerless burros, overnight fishing trips, neighborhood hermits, …cowboy pranks, and hypnotized hens are recreated with wit dryer than the Chihuahuan Desert.” Jan Sherman has spent the great majority of her nine-plus decades in Catron, Grant, and Luna counties of New Mexico. Well known and loved in and around Silver City and Bayard, Jan could be seen waving from her perch on her throne as the Queen of the Red Hatters on a float in the Fourth of July Parade or in her more serious pursuits as a member of the board of the WNMU Foundation. While she was married to the handsome basketball player, coach, and school principal, Fannie Ray, the couple raised their two children, Judy and Jeff, in Santa Rita. After having been widowed for nine years, Jan married Ben Sherman and spent 22 years in Deming, later returning to Grant county. Come to the Silver City Annex on Saturday, October 8, at 2 pm and meet, listen to, and talk to this interesting person – Jan Sherman.
