Big Brothers Big Sisters Mountain Region is back in Grant County. On Tuesday, July 12, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m, the organization will be hosting an Open House and Informational Meeting at the First United Methodist Church in Silver City.
“This Open House is a chance for anyone and everyone in the community to come and learn about the great work of Big Brothers Big Sisters and in particular how we can - and are - serving the children of Grant County,” said Regional Director, Dawn Starostka.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the nation’s oldest and largest 1-to-1 youth mentoring program. At one time the program was up to 70 or 80 kids in Grant County, but had dwindled to almost 0 in 2014. The program is back, is stronger and more efficient, and is growing to serve the children who can most benefit from a carefully screened, caring adult mentor in their lives. “There is need in Grant County and there is also a strong sense of community and willingness to help. I have met so many helpful and supportive community and business leaders here, and I know this program will be back to those numbers very soon,” Starostka said.
The Open House will be a time to visit with BBBS CEO Andrea Maril, Regional Director Dawn Starostka, Program Coordinator Nancy Chaparro and Dona Ana-Grant County Regional Board President Lucas Peerman about the operation of the program, the requirements for the program and how the community can be involved in and support its re-growth.
About Big Brothers Big Sisters Mountain Region Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has been the leader in one-to-one youth service for over a century, with proven success in creating positive friendships that benefit children, volunteers, families, neighborhoods and communities. Research has shown positive relationships between adult mentors and at-risk children have a direct and measurable impact on children's lives. Youth in the program perform better in school, get along better with their families, and are less likely to use drugs or alcohol. In 2015 BBBS of Southwestern New Mexico merged with BBBS of Northern New Mexico to form BBBS Mountain Region. BBBS Mountain Region currently serves nearly 1,100 local youngsters and their families in Dona Ana, Grants, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Taos, Colfax, McKinley, San Miguel, and Mora Counties.
