Art from Within (AFW) is a grassroots organization that developed after the first art exhibit last year where art pieces from Grant County Detention Center inmates were displayed. The intention is to have an event that highlights the positive qualities and talents of inmates to help shift the stigma of people who are incarcerated and want to move beyond their mistakes. The first art exhibit was well attended and there was a lot of interest expressed to keep developing the initiative beyond the single event. AFW supports opportunities for incarcerated and re-integrating individuals to develop their talents, values, and self-worth through creative expression. We are planning a 2nd art exhibit Art Beyond Bars on Monday, May 7 at 6 p.m. at the Western New Mexico University Miller Library. We are inviting other artists who have previously had the experience of incarceration to submit their art work for the art exhibit. Pieces will be available for purchase. We plan to expand the program to include teachers to teach other mediums of art, community art projects to include the work of incarcerated or previously incarcerated artists, and special projects to involve families.
