Where is it?
The largest gathering of Mata Ortiz potters in the United States takes place annually in historic Ft. Cobre, in the tiny mountain community of Pinos Altos.
The Fiesta, which draws international attention from collectors and artists, is produced by the Mimbres Region Arts Council and is sponsored by
Chino Federal
Credit Union.
At the largest gathering of Mata Ortiz potters in the United States,
world-renowned artist Juan Quezada and his family conduct workshops, perform public demonstrations and mingle with the crowd at Ft. Cobre in the little mountain town of Pinos Altos. The fort becomes a living cultural museum reminiscent of Mata Ortiz, Mexico.
Hundreds of custom pots will be available for sale. Folklorico dancers, Mariachis and Charro hourses add to the excitement. Traditional food and arts and crafts will be available throughout the weekend.
Juan Quezada
The acknowledged master and originator of the ceramic industry in Mata Ortiz, Mexico, Juan Quezada as a young man gathered wood to support his family, explored mounds of artifacts and pottery shards from prehistoric people. Fascinated by the ancient designs and pottery craft, he experimented and after years of work began to market his own pots.
When discovered by Spencer MacCallum in 1976, 12 potters worked in the village. Today, Juan Quezada pots sell for thousands of dollars and the village is filled with potters manifesting their own unique style and technique
